Diamond Defined: Illegal/Illegally To Infield Fly

From the 2006 book, The Official Rules of Baseball Illustrated, by David Nemec, I will present Rule 2 of the Code - the definitions of baseball terms - over the course of the 2012 baseball season. Today’s terms are: Illegal/Illegally, Illegal Pitch, Infielder, Infield Fly.

Illegal/Illegally – contrary to these rules.

Illegal Pitch – a pitch delivered to the batter when the pitcher does not have her pivot foot in contact with the pitcher’s plate; a quick return pitch.

Infielder – a fielder who occupies a position in the infield.

Infield Fly – a fair fly ball (not including a line drive nor an attempted bunt) which can be caught by an infielder with ordinary effort, when first and second, or first, second and third bases are occupied, before two are out.

My Comment: Congratulations to David Ortiz on blasting his four hundredth career homerun and accepting his one thousandth career walk in this losing game against the Oakland Athletics! Ortiz also scored both Red Sox runs today. Guys, I wrote sweep the Athletics, not be swept by the Athletics. Granted a number of former Red Sox players (Crisp, Moss, Reddick) did significant damage against Boston, but this should have been a winning road trip against below .500 teama. What will happen this weekend against the Yankees who are definitely not below .500??

BOSTON: Starting Pitcher: Aaron Cook; Losing Pitcher: Aaron Cook (2)
OAKLAND: Starting Pitcher: A. J. Griffin; Winning Pitcher: Grant Balfour
OAKLAND: Save: Ryan Cook

Red Sox: Wins 42, Losses 40, Percentage: .512

Boston Splits Series With Seattle, 2 To 1

My Comment: On their sixth attempt, the Boston Red Sox have finally won an extra-inning game! And thankfully, it was not a drama-driven victory. The Red Sox leave Seattle winning two out of the four games. Considering the level of play by the Mariners, Boston should have swept them. Well, the Athletics are next on this road trip and perhaps Boston can sweep them.

BOSTON: Starting Pitcher: Felix Doubront; Winning Pitcher: Vicente Padilla (2)
SEATTLE: Starting Pitcher: Jason Vargas; Losing Pitcher: Brandon League
