My Comment: Even though the Boston Red Sox end the month of May with a loss, it has been a merry month for them. They've managed to have a winning record and to climb to first place in the AL East. On an individual level, Adrian Gonzalez leads the AL in RBIs and Jacoby Ellsbury leads the AL in stolen bases, David Ortiz has a dozen homers, and Carl Crawford has been named AL Player of the Week. So a special congrats to Carl and thanks for the walk-off wins! Here's hoping June is an even better month for the Red Sox.

The Boston Red Sox are demonstrating that they know how to win not only in blowouts, but in close games as well. Keep those hits and runs coming!

No Playing In The Rain For Red Sox And Tigers

Another game postponement due to rain. The Boston Red Sox and the Detroit Tigers will makeup the game tomorrow as part of a split double-header. The first game will be played at 10:05 a.m. Pacific time / 1:05 p.m. Eastern time with the pitchers who were scheduled for today's game. The second game of the day is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. Pacific time / 7:05 p.m. Eastern time.

Let's hope they are able to get both games completed. This is the last visit that the Red Sox are making to the Tigers this regular season.

The best news regarding the Red Sox is that they are in first place in the American League East!! Even if the second place team wins today, Boston will maintain the lead. Finally first!

My Comment: The Red Sox handily win the rubber game and the series over the Indians. Boston now has a new hitting high for the season and will look to see that production continue when they meet the Tigers tomorrow. Can Boston not have the usual hitting letdown after a game such as this? Hope the momentum stays strong. Special mention today of Carl Crawford who went four for four. My Comment: You are allowed to intentionally walk a batter when the first base is open. Especially important to do so when that batter is a hot hitter, there's a runner in scoring position, and it is a close game. Please remember for next time. One interesting occurrence of the game - Buchholz and Masterson have almost identical game lines, with Clay getting one more strikeout than Justin, but pitching one third of an inning less. Guess Clay should have stayed in for at least that extra third - might have made a major difference in the game.

My Comment: Like to acknowledge J. D. Drew's contributions to today's win over the Tigers. His homerun, two RBIs, and his catches of sharply hit balls to right field were instrumental in the victory and were part of the drama that recent Red Sox games seem to have. The Red Sox have now won six games in a row, several of them with late inning dramatics. Nerve-wrecking, but exciting. Tomorrow Interleague play begins and the Chicago Cubs come to Fenway for the first time in 93 years! The last time the Cubs were in Boston, the Red Sox won the 1918 World Series. Precipitation Postponement Of Rubber Game Between Boston And Baltimore

The second game in the two-game series between the Boston Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles has been postponed due to rain. No makeup date has been announced as of today. The Orioles’ next scheduled visit to Fenway Park is for a four-game series from Thursday 7 July to Sunday 10 July, the final Red Sox home games before the All-Star break. Baltimore’s final visit to Fenway during the regular season is a three-game series from Monday 19 September to Wednesday 21 September.

In other Red Sox news today, Daisuke Matsuzaka has joined John Lackey on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right elbow. Michael Bowden has been called up from Triple-A Pawtucket to fill Dice-K’s spot on the roster and Mike will work out of the bullpen. Alfredo Aceves and Tim Wakefield will be in the starting rotation

If there is a break in the weather, the next game will be played on Wednesday 18 May 2011, at 4:10 p.m.PT/7:10 p.m.ET, against the Detroit Tigers, in Fenway Park, with Boston Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz.

No thanks to the wind in Fenway Park (which was the hitter's menace for both sides), Boston snatched another incredible win from unbelieving Baltimore. My Comment: The Boston Red Sox had opportunities to blow this game wide open, but failed to do so and stranded ten men on the bags. Despite the good outcome, Boston can not afford to leave runs on the bases - let's hope for better results in the next two games - on second thought, for the next one hundred plus games. On individual merits, Adrian Gonzalez leads in RBIs with 31 and Jacoby Ellsbury leads in stolen bases with 12. I suspect those numbers will increase by the time Boston says Bye-Bye to the Bronx. Good start guys!

Baseball Bucket List: GAMES

On Tuesday 9 March 2010 a book was published titled: The Baseball Fan’s Bucket List: 162 Things You Must Do, See, Get, and Experience Before You Die, by Robert Santelli and Jenna Santelli. The book’s table of contents lists all 162 items per the authors’ ranking. I have taken that list and organized it into twelve categories, which I find easier to consider when dealing with the list. I will be presenting each category alphabetically over the course of the 2011 baseball season. The number to the left of each item is its position on the Santellis’ list. Items in red would be of particular interest to Red Sox fans. Today’s category number four out of twelve is:

GAMES

13 See Some Grapefruit League Spring Training Games
I haven’t seen any Grapefruit League Spring Training games, which is unfortunate since this is the league in which the Red Sox play during the month of March in Florida. This year’s Spring Training for the Red Sox was so-so – nothing about which to brag. In 2012, Boston will be in a new stadium called jetBlue Park, but still in Fort Myers.

15 See Some Cactus League Spring Training Games
Well, I had a possibility of seeing some Cactus League Spring Training in Arizona during one weekend in March 2004. But alas, the guy I was suppose to go with changed his mind and I lost that opportunity to see spring training games – I was even planning on learning how to drive and everything. Ah well, perhaps the chance will come around again.

25 See The (New York) Yankees Play The (Boston) Red Sox
Yes, this I have seen, but unfortunately it was not a happy time in Fenway Park for me, as the Red Sox lost the game. But in recent years important Red Sox/Yankees games have been won by Boston and that makes up for my personal disappointment.

33 See The (St. Louis) Cardinals Play The (Chicago) Cubs
I have not seen either team play – not against other teams or against each other. However, the Chicago Cubs will come to Fenway Park to play the Boston Red Sox in three Interleague games from Friday 20 May to Sunday 22 May 2011.

58 See An Interleague Game
Haven’t seen an official regular season Interleague Game, but I was one of 115,300 people in attendance at an exhibition game between the Boston Red Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers held in the LA Coliseum on Saturday 29 March 2008. That was the largest crowd ever to watch a baseball game. And by the way, the Red Sox won the game 7 to 4.

59 See The (Los Angeles) Dodgers Play The (San Francisco) Giants
Yes, I have seen them play each other twice in Dodger Stadium – pre-McCourt era when fans from the rival teams didn’t physically bash one another.

My Comment: Not much positive to say concerning this two-game series - Red Sox losing both games and still below .500, Ellsbury's hitting streak stopped at nineteen, and pitching that, well, isn't pitching. The only good news from today's game is that Tim Wakefield is now the oldest active player in MLB and he is the oldest player ever for the Boston Red Sox. And as befits his brief outing today, Tim did not disappoint. Boston has a day off tomorrow to regroup before encountering the Yankees in New York on Friday. Perhaps the 13th will turn Boston's luck around.

My Comment: Jacoby Ellsbury now has the longest active hitting streak in the MLB with hitting safely in eighteen games. Jacoby has come into his own at the leadoff spot and is doing well stealing bases. It's great that the Red Sox end their longest homestand of the season on a win. The only regret is that Beckett didn't get the win - he was wonderful on the mound. The team has great energy to begin their road trip.

Of the Red Sox batters, only Varitek didn't get a hit, but he'll have another opportunity tomorrow.

Dozen Twins Hits Contribute To Red Sox Defeat

Twins highlight: Nine runs

My Comment: Today's and yesterday's game - opponents twenty runs, Red Sox two runs - averages out to one Red Sox run for every ten opponent's runs. And what is particularly awful about today's loss is that it was against the team with the lowest number of runs scored in the American League. What is wrong Boston? These two games have seen the opponents with a total of thirty hits to Boston's fourteen - over twice as many! Boston won't be reaching .500 by the end of this series and my hope for an eight and three homestand will not be realized. Playing on empty is not playing at all.
