My Comment: Newsflash! Jon Lester owns the Baltimore Orioles! Okay, he may not have an ownership stake in the Orioles, but Lester has a pitcher's strike out against Baltimore. Lester is 14 and 0 lifetime when pitching against the Orioles. The Red Sox return home from this second road trip 6 and 3, a major improvement over the 0 and 6 of the first road trip. Boston will play eleven games in eleven days on this upcoming homestand - the longest of the season. Hope Boston goes at least 8 and 3.

My Comment: If Daniel Bard is the heir apparent to Jonathan Papelbon, then he needs to stop losing games. Bard has three losses (tied with Clay Buchholz for most on the pitching staff), no wins, and no saves. Then again, if Papelbon keeps up his saving ways, perhaps an heir is unnecessary.

Baseball Bucket List: EVENTS

On Tuesday 9 March 2010 a book was published titled: The Baseball Fan’s Bucket List: 162 Things You Must Do, See, Get, and Experience Before You Die, by Robert Santelli and Jenna Santelli. The book’s table of contents lists all 162 items per the authors’ ranking. I have taken that list and organized it into twelve categories, which I find easier to consider when dealing with the list. I will be presenting each category alphabetically over the course of the 2011 baseball season. The number to the left of each item is its position on the Santellis’ list. Today’s category number three out of twelve is:

EVENTS

3 Go To Opening Day
This usually occurs during the first week of April, although this year MLB opened on Thursday 31 March. For the Red Sox, opening day was Friday 1 April and it was a road loss to the Texas Rangers. Boston’s home opening day was Friday 8 April and it was a win against the New York Yankees. Although I have not attended an Opening Day game, I have watched a number of them on television and I hope to experience it firsthand someday.

4 Attend A World Series Game
The World Series usually occurs during the last week of October, although in recent years it has gone into the first week of November. This year the Series is back to the traditional end of October. Unfortunately, my only enjoyment of the World Series has been either in the comfort of my home or, in the case of the 2004 and 2007 WS, in my favorite New England sports living bar. I’m sure the Red Sox will once again return to the Fall Classic and perhaps I may be able to make an in-person appearance.

8 Experience A Hall Of Fame Induction Weekend In Cooperstown
The Hall of Fame induction is usually held the last weekend in July (in 2011 it will be held from Friday 22 July to Monday 25 July, which is actually the fourth weekend in July this year). The 2011 inductees are Roberto Alomar, Bert Blyleven, and Pat Gillick. As I have yet to make it to Cooperstown, I have not had the experience of attending the induction weekend. To be honest, I hardly ever watch the broadcast of the actual induction ceremony, but I did so on Sunday 26 July 2009 when former Boston Red Sox leftfielder, James Edward Rice, was finally inducted into the Hall.

10 Go To A Major League Baseball All-Star Game
The All-Star game is held on the second Tuesday in July. This year’s game will be held on Tuesday 12 July at Chase Field (home of the Arizona Diamondbacks) in Phoenix, Arizona. Future All-Star games will be held as follows: Tuesday 10 July 2012 at Kaufman Stadium (home of the Kansas City Royals) in Kansas City, Missouri and Tuesday 9 July 2013 possibly at Citi Field (home of the New York Mets) in New York, New York. I may have never been to an All-Star game, but I certainly watch the broadcast every year and the ancillary Home Run Derby held the day before. Very happy that David Ortiz won the Derby in 2010.

26 Go To The College World Series
The College World Series is held in Omaha, Nebraska during the month of June and will continue to be held in Omaha through 2035. In 2011, games will take place in TD Ameritrade Park Omaha. No, never been to Nebraska (only connection is a friend from grad school and Bruce Springsteen’s album), I’m sure that seeing potential major leaguers would be exciting.

36 Attend The World Baseball Classic
The next World Baseball Classic is scheduled to take place in 2013, with plans to hold it every four years (i.e. 2017, 2021, 2025 etc.). I like the idea of this international baseball tournament, but don’t think that there is really any good time in the year to hold it. Perhaps either mid-January to mid-February or mid-November to mid-December would be good.

50 Go To The Midnight Sun Baseball Classic
Occurring in June around the time of the Summer Solstice, the Midnight Sun Baseball Classic takes place in Fairbanks, Alaska. In 2011, this night “day” game will be held on Tuesday 21 June and the first pitch is scheduled for 10:30 p.m. Having never been to Alaska or anywhere that has the midnight sun, I think it would be phenomenal to attend a baseball game in the middle of the night and the only light necessary is the sun’s!

57 Attend The Hall Of Fame Classic Weekend In Cooperstown
The Hall of Fame Classic occurs the third weekend in June and in 2011 it will be held from Saturday 18 June to Sunday 19 June. Yes, another reason to visit Cooperstown someday.

82 Attend Jackie Robinson Day
Held on 15 April, it commemorates the day that Jackie Robison made his debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947 and thereby broke the barrier that had prevented Blacks from playing in the Major Leagues. All ballplayers and umpires wear Jackie’s retired number 42. Now that’s a sight I would like to see for myself one day at a ballpark.

91 Attend The Little League World Series
This is the first experience of a world series for baseball players. It’s held in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania during the month of August. Never played Little League baseball, so being a participant was not a possibility; however, Boston Red Sox captain, Jason Varitek was a participant in the 1984 Little League World Series.

96 Attend The Cooperstown Symposium On Baseball And American Culture
One more special event at the Baseball Hall of Fame. The 2011 symposium will be held from Wednesday 1 June to Friday 3 June. Baseball from an academic perspective as presented in 2010. How would you relate baseball and American culture?

113 Go To An Old Timers’ Day
I hate to say it, but the MLB team observing this tradition on a regular basis is the New York Yankees. This year it will be held on Sunday 26 June before the scheduled game against the Colorado Rockies. Former Yankees manager, Joe Torre, has been invited to the event.

135 Attend The Annual Civil Rights Game
For 2011 and 2012 this game will be in Atlanta, Georgia in Turner Field, home of the Atlanta Braves. This year the game will be held on Sunday 15 May and the Braves will be playing the Philadelphia Phillies.

140 Eat At A Famous Ballplayer’s Restaurant
As long as the food is good, this would be a fun activity, especially if the owner showed up while you were there. Current player Albert Pujols has a restaurant called Pujols 5 Westport Grill. And for Red Sox fans, Jerry Remy has a restaurant near Fenway Park called Jerry Remy’s Sports Bar & Grill.

157 Attend A Negro Leagues Day Celebration And Game
The Detroit Tigers will be having a weekend celebration of the Negro Leagues this year. It will take place from Friday 15 July to Sunday 17 July in Comerica Park and the Chicago White Sox will be the opponent during the weekend. Glad that part of baseball history is being kept alive and remembered.

Boston Red Sox Events
The Boston Red Sox have events that are specific to the team such as Patriot’s Day (Monday 18 April 2011); State Days (Connecticut – Sunday 4 September 2011, Maine – Sunday 24 July 2011, New Hampshire – Saturday 4 June 2011, Rhode Island – Friday 8 July 2011, Vermont – Sunday 1 May 2011, along with Cape Cod Day – Wednesday 22 June 2011, Western Massachusetts Day – Wednesday 3 August 2011, and Nova Scotia Day – Tuesday 5 July 2011); and Red Sox Nation Day (Friday 17 June 2011). Guess Massachusetts Day is every day at Fenway Park!

MLB News: The Los Angeles Dodgers have been taken over by Major League Baseball accoring to Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig. Here is his statement:

Pursuant to my authority as Commissioner, I informed Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt today that I will appoint a representative to oversee all aspects of the business and the day-to-day operations of the Club, Selig said in a statement.

I have taken this action because of my deep concerns regarding the finances and operations of the Dodgers and to protect the best interests of the Club, its great fans and all of Major League Baseball. My office will continue its thorough investigation into the operations and finances of the Dodgers and related entities during the period of Mr. McCourt's ownership. I will announce the name of my representative in the next several days.

The Dodgers have been one of the most prestigious franchises in all of sports, and we owe it to their legion of loyal fans to ensure that this club is being operated properly now and will be guided appropriately in the future.

Considering all the negativity surrounding the Dodgers in recent years (the McCourts' acrimonious divorce, payroll problems, assault on a San Francsico Giants fan), I think that this is a good step for MLB to take - five days after all of baseball celebrated Jackie Robinson Day, the legacy of the Brooklyn Dodgers deserves better than the current owenership can give it.

The question to ask in whether the Red Sox tie the Blue Jays or win the series is which Daisuke Matsuzaka will be pitching tomorrow? Will they make it to the top or stay at the bottom? Let's see where they are a month from now and how the pitching and hitting has developed.

Baseball Bucket List: COLLECTIONS

On Tuesday 9 March 2010 a book was published titled: The Baseball Fan’s Bucket List: 162 Things You Must Do, See, Get, and Experience Before You Die, by Robert Santelli and Jenna Santelli. The book’s table of contents lists all 162 items per the authors’ ranking. I have taken that list and organized it into twelve categories, which I find easier to consider when dealing with the list. I will be presenting each category alphabetically over the course of the 2011 baseball season. The number to the left of each item is its position on the Santellis’ list. Today’s category number two out of twelve is:

COLLECTIONS

24 Own A Baseball Glove
I have owned a baseball glove in the past, but alas there is a lack of one in my present. Although I was usually the catcher, I made due with an infielder’s glove. I like to think that it helped hone my catching skills. Perhaps another mitt is in my future. . .

44 Own A Piece Of Vintage Clothing
Generally speaking, clothing which was produced before the 1920s is referred to as antique clothing and clothing from the 1920s to 1980s is considered vintage. – Wikipedia
According to the above definition, the only vintage clothing item I have is my Red Sox baseball cap. Can’t remember exactly when I bought it, but I’m pretty sure I bought at the official souvenir store across from Fenway. No matter, I like it and now to get an accompanying vintage Carlton Fisk shirt. . .

53 Maintain A Baseball Card Collection
I have one sort of baseball card of Red Sox team captain Jason Varitek sans statistics. However, no real baseball cards for me  – all that wasted bubblegum of my childhood! The only other baseball “card” item I have is a cardboard coaster with the 2007 World Series Champions and Boston Red Sox logos. Not surprisingly, if I were to start a baseball card collection, I would concentrate on Boston Red Sox players.

72 Own An Autographed Baseball Collection
Unfortunately, I don’t even own a baseball anymore, never mind an autographed one. For me, I would want to get as many ballplayers signatures as possible and not be Red Soxcentric in this collection. Individual signatures on each baseball with the date and place are my preferences for how they should be autographed. .

84 Own A Classic Baseball Photograph
The classic photograph I would like is one of Fenway Park on its Opening Day in 1912. And player photographs would also be great, especially Red Sox ones.

89 Start A Baseball Bobblehead Collection
I don’t really understand the popularity of bobbleheads – the up and down motion just bothers me somehow. Non-moving figurines of Red Sox players work well for me.

106 Own A Piece Of Baseball Art
Although I am an art lover, I don’t own anything that could possibly be considered Baseball Art. I think some artwork depicting all thirty baseball parks would be great.

121 Own A Baseball Antique
No antiques for me either. I suppose it would be wonderful to own specific pieces of equipment from baseball players over the decades – a base stealer’s shoes, a power hitter’s bat, a knuckleball catcher’s mitt, etc. – and have one amazing collection of equipment antiques.

123 Shop For Baseball Memorabilia In Cooperstown
Of course being at the Baseball Hall of Fame is the preferred way to obtain the memorabilia, but as one who has yet to make that trip to Cooperstown, online is a good alternative - http://shop.baseballhall.org/?sourceid=topnav

127 Own A Copy Of The Barry Halper Collection Of Baseball Memorabilia
During a 50-year stretch, Halper gathered over 100,000 items from the great game, including a 1912 World Series program signed by "Smokey" Joe Wood and President Woodrow Wilson, a ticket stub from the Lou Gehrig memorial game, and Mickey Mantle's 1956 Triple Crown Trophy. The entire legendary lot was offered in two separate auctions in 1999: one live at Sotheby's New York headquarters and the other via the Internet at http://www.sothebys.amazon.com. – Amazon.com

My Collection Suggestions

Have A Bat Collection
This could encompass the different types of bats used from the nineteenth century to the present. An alternative could be to collect the bats used by a player over the length of his career, one bat per year. Or have a collection comprising the bats of each winner of the Silver Slugger award. And for the Red Sox fans, a collection of a bat from each Boston player every year.

Have A Glove Collection
This could encompass the different types of gloves used from the nineteenth century to the present. An alternative could be to collect the gloves used by a catcher over the length of his career, one glove per year. Or have a collection comprising the gloves of each winner of the Golden Glove award. And for the Red Sox fans, a collection of a glove from each Boston player every year.

Have An Uniform Collection
This could encompass, one each, of the home and away uniforms of each baseball team every year from as far back as possible. An alternative could be to collect, one each, of the home and away uniforms of each player on a specific team every year, e.g. Boston Red Sox.

Which Pitcher (Really) Won?

In today’s Boston Red Sox versus New York Yankees game at Fenway Park, the Red Sox won the game by a score of 9 to 6. But who was the true winning pitcher of the game? The official outcome is New York starting pitcher Phil Hughes – no decision, relief pitcher Bartolo Colon – losing pitcher; Boston starting pitcher John Lackey – winning pitcher, relief pitcher Jonathan Papelbon - save. Although that is the way it has been recorded. I’d like to offer a different perspective. My pitching outcome would be New York starting pitcher Phil Hughes – losing pitcher; Boston starting John Lackey – no decision, Jonathan Papelbon – winning pitcher. Let me explain.

Hughes and Lackey both gave up six runs. The six runs that Hughes gave up in his outing of two innings of work were 66.67% of the total runs (nine) given up by the New York Yankees. Bartolo Colon (two) and Boone Logan (one) gave up 33.33% of the total runs. Hughes took two innings to give up six runs, while the Yankees bullpen took six innings to give up three runs. My position is that since Hughes gave up the majority of the runs, he has the greater responsibility for the loss than the relievers. Phil Hughes should have been assessed the loss.

The six runs that Lackey gave up in five innings of work were 100% of the total runs (six) given up by the Boston Red Sox (in reality, just Lackey). Alfredo Aceves, Bobby Jenks, Daniel Bard, and Jonathan Papelbon did not give up any runs. Lackey gave up at least a run in each of the five innings he pitched, while the Red Sox bullpen gave up no runs in the four innings they pitched. Therefore, my position is that the relief pitchers had the greater responsibility for the win than Lackey did and he should have been given a no decision. Now I would have given the relief pitchers the win. However, only one pitcher can be given the win and Jonathan Papelbon had the best line of the four relief pitchers. Jonathan Papelbon should have been assessed the win.

I know that my way of looking at the pitching in today’s game is somewhat subjective, but I believe with some merit. Should the pitcher (Hughes) who gave up the majority of the runs to the opponent team get off the hook with a no decision, just because a relief pitcher gave up the “winning” run? Hughes does not deserve the no decision. And why should the pitcher (Lackey) who gave up all the runs to the opponent team be given a win, just because his team scored in the bottom of the inning in which he was taken out of the game? It is obvious Lackey wasn’t pitching well and truly does not deserve the win.

The straightforward, by the numbers and where they occur to determine wins, losses, no decisions for pitchers is the necessary objective way to proceed. However, consideration should be given to the quality of the pitching, not just the luck of circumstances that followed after the pitcher left the game. There really can’t be an official way of doing this, but I just want people to be aware that the quantity of wins and losses don’t tell the whole story. Quality is involved as well.

My Comment: Welcome to Fenway and to victory! Home is sweet!! The Red Sox had the lead at the end of the seventh and kept it for their first win of 2011.

MLB News: Former Boston Red Sox leftfielder, Manny Ramirez (Tampa Bay Rays), has abruptly retired after nineteen years playing professional baseball. MLB issued the following statement:

Major League Baseball recently notified Manny Ramirez of an issue under Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment program. Rather than continue with the process under the program, Ramirez has informed MLB that he is retiring as an active player. If Ramirez seeks reinstatement in the future, the process under the drug program will be completed. MLB will not have any further comment on this matter.

I am as surprised as anyone at this announcement, but for all he did while a member of the Red Sox, I wish Manny well for the future.
