Orioles Over Red Sox

Well it was a walk-off day for the Boston Red Sox, unfortunately it was the Baltimore Orioles who had the walk-off run and the win of the opening game of the three-game series in Oriole Park. Despite the three homeruns, the Red Sox were unable to muster enough runs to continue their winning streak. And they are now back to fourth place in the AL East. What is happening (or not happening) with Boston's defense? At the end of April, Beltre has five errors and at this rate he's looking at thirty of them for the season. Not exactly the performance that Boston had in mind when they acquired him. It would be great if Lowell could get more playing time at third, but I know Boston would have a problem with that. Sometime this season Lowell will have a major positive impact on a game and I for one will be glad he's still around. In the meantime, the Red Sox play tomorrow and hope to even the series.

It's a sweep and a shutout! The Boston Red Sox have their first sweep this season and it comes on the road against the Toronto Blue Jays. Amazing - on the road - would not have predicted that. Two days in a row a showcase of excellent pitching by both teams in Rogers Centre, but it is especially gratifying to have such outings by Boston's pitchers. They need to meet expectations. The Boston Red Sox have third place in the AL East all to themselves - slowly moving up the standings. Boston remains on the road, but there is an off day tomorrow. Let's hope they don't have an off day on Friday.

About the only things similar to yesterday's game, besides the participants (Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays) and locale (Rogers Centre), was the winning team and a one run difference in the score. There were fewer hits, fewer runs, and yes, even an error in today's game than there were in yesterday's endurance test. Buchholz stepped up to the challenge and only gave up one run over eight innings and someone other than Papelbon received a save. Since he was pitching so well, I hoped that Clay would have the first complete game of the season for Boston, but they are so rare for the Red Sox, which is a shame. I am a believer in complete games and I wish Terry believed in them as well. Today was the perfect opportunity for one. Anyway, Boston is now tied with Toronto for third place in the AL East. One interesting observation, the teams with the best and worst records in the Major League are in the AL East (Tampa Bay and Baltimore). No surprise that the best record would be in the AL East, but to have the worst record as well - totally unexpected.

This game was exhausting and I wasn't even playing, so imagine how the actual players are feeling! The outcome of this first real hitfest of the season for the Boston Red Sox was a marvelous (miraculous?) victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. The game in Rogers Centre was slow (duration of the game) and furious (hit after hit after hit), a combination that alternately provided happiness and despair over the course of the game for both the teams and the fans. Everyone on the Red Sox was played got a hit, except the Leftfielders - that's what it's like to be "out in left field", ha! The pitching just wasn't there for both teams (why did Beckett falter so badly?), but it was the batters who made it an exciting game, though I'm sure an earlier resolution of the match would have been appreciated. What amazes me is that with all the plays, neither team had an error - would not thought that was possible with all the activity in the field. One thing I do think is that tomorrow there will be fewer hits, fewer runs, and perhaps an error or two. Let's hope Boston can keep the momentum going over the next two days and sweep the Blue Jays. Get plenty of rest!

It is a BRS and BC day in my favorite New England sports living bar. Both the Boston Red Sox and the Boston Celtics are playing this morning and both are going for sweeps. Looking forward to a day of joy! The bar already has five people who are here for the Celtics. Red Sox people will show up soon - Rich, Lisa, John. Two plays to Beltre - two errors (only charged with one) - such is the new Boston defense. Both teams are behind - not a good sign of things to come. Now the Celtics have pulled ahead, while the Red Sox are still trying to score their first run. The lead has left the Celtics, however the lead has come to the Red Sox. The cheering level in the bar alternates between the two teams - at least there are some things to cheer about. Mike Lowell pinched hit, got a run-scoring double and then left - specialty rules. The Celtics lost - will have to play another day. In the meantime, Terry took Tim out with two outs in the seventh and two on in Fenway Park. Why, Terry why?? Then Okajima gave up a homerun and now the game is tied. What is it with three-run sevenths and Boston relief pitching?? Some people have left the bar, but many are still here to watch the end of the Red Sox game. Let's hope we get have at least half-joy today. Well, I'm in the danger zone again - dart players (Molly and Jeremy) to my left - flying projectiles do add to the bar experience :) . And we are in extra innings! But Boston relief pitching does it again - three runs in the tenth for the Baltimore Orioles. Although they gave it a great try, the Red Sox only manage to get back two runs. No sweeps for the Red Sox and the Celtics today. There is no joy in Boston and in the bar.

Yesterday's slow and steady became today's fast and furious as the Boston Red Sox homered their way to a win over the Baltimore Orioles. A total of five taters (two by the Orioles and three by the Red Sox) flew out of Fenway Park giving the fans a little more excitement as they enjoyed today's win. Boston has now won its second home series. Somewhat worrisome is the fact that the relief pitching has given up three runs in each of the first two games of this series, resulting in closer games than would have been expected going into the late innings. Relief pitching: shutdown the opponent - do not give them hope. The Red Sox will be going for a sweep of the Orioles tomorrow - let's shoo the birds away.

Not as an exciting a win in Fenway Park today as the last victory there for the Boston Red Sox, but scoring steadily, one run at a time over the course of the game, is as effective as any dramatic end-of-game walk-off (though the winning run was due to a walk). There was a little cheering during the game - Ortiz hit his first homerun of the season (earlier than last season) and gave Boston the lead over the Baltimore Orioles. David used a different stance at the plate and it could be a major factor in his hitting this season. Looking forward to more from Ortiz and the Red Sox tomorrow.

Yesterday Beckett gave up three runs in the seventh inning, and the Boston Red Sox go on to dramatically win the game in extra innings. Today Buchholz gave up three runs in the seventh inning, and the Boston Red Sox go on to quietly lose the game in regulation innings. Of the two of them, Beckett had the worse start (gave up more runs and hits), but he ends up with a "no decision"; while Buchholz, with the better start (four less runs and one less hit), ends up with a loss. Yes, a day does make a difference and the Texas Rangers get a win. Ultimately, the lack of Red Sox hitting against Rangers pitching was the difference in today's game outcome. In any case, Boston has its first Fenway Park series win of the season. The Red Sox will go for the second home series win beginning tomorrow.

Excitement in Fenway Park tonight. For the second game in a row, the Boston Red Sox have a walk-off win against the Texas Rangers. Not only a walk-off game, but an extra-innings game. Not only an extra-innings game, but a Grand Slam game! Good energy has made a return to the Red Sox. Now have work on the starting pitching. Have no problem that Beckett pitched into the seventh inning and his being taken out then was the right move. Just need better beginnings in the games. Tomorrow is the third and final game of the series with Texas, but Boston has already won the series. Hurrah!

As of today there is no such thing as "Home Sweet Home" for the Boston Red Sox. The only revolution in Fenway Park was the Tampa Bay Rays breaking Boston's six year win streak on Patriots' Day. What can you say about ineffectual pitching and minimal hitting? That it leads to losses and despair or perhaps it can be a catalyst for bearing down and improving. Boston still has a chance to have a winning homestand as they play six more games at Fenway before going back on the road. Let's move up to third place in the standings by next week guys!

Tampa Bay Tramples Boston

Well the game may have been delayed starting by half an hour due to rain, but Lester was definitely warm enough as he had a 1,2,3 first inning. Once again it is Sunday and I am enjoying the game against the Tampa Bay Rays in my favorite New England sports living bar. There are only five of us, not including the bar staff, watching the game - regulars Rich and Lisa, and a man and woman couple (the man has been in the bar before the renovation and pointed out the differences as he gave the woman a tour). A quiet Sunday - a welcome change from last Sunday. I wrote too soon! There are now twice as many of us - some softball players have arrived. After four Rays runs, perhaps the rains should come again! Never mind - it's an official game now. And the noise level has increased in the bar - ugh! Perhaps I was too optimistic when I wrote earlier that I am enjoying the game - I'm beginning to wonder when I will truly enjoy a Boston Red Sox game again. At least Boston was not shutout. There's one final opportunity tomorrow in Fenway Park to have some redemption over the Rays. When was the last time the Red Sox lost all four games of a four-game series at home? Hope the next time is not Monday.

For the first time this season the Boston Red Sox lost a game while hitting in the double digits. It was just a matter time before that happened - it just shouldn't have happened at home during a losing streak. Especially with three Boston homeruns. Of course the Tampa Bay Rays capitalized on the Mike Cameron error in the first inning and scored sixty-six percent of their eventual six total runs. Mike should have stayed in the hospital. Fenway Park better become friendly real soon. Who would have predicted that the Red Sox would have a better road record than home record?? Need a new home direction - one that leads to W, as in win.

The Boston Red Sox end their first road trip of the 2010 season with an error-ridden, no run-producing disaster. I should stop being amazed at the lack of hitting that occurs after a game in which the Red Sox have a large number of hits. It is just Boston's modus operandi and the Minnesota Twins definitely took advantage of it today in Target Field. All three Boston errors were committed by new members of the Red Sox - yes, this is called learning defense using the on-the-job-training method. Not quite the best way to do it in actual games that count. Today's bright spot was Dustin "Power" Pedroia who had fifty percent of the Red Sox hits and now has a .405 batting average. Amazingly, Dustin is leading the team in homeruns with four of them. Of course Pedroia's batting average may not stay at the .400 level, but the fact that he has reached it is cause for celebration. Way to go Pedrioa!

Even in a team sport such as baseball, sometimes one man makes a difference. For the Boston Red Sox that difference was three runs and a win against the Minnesota Twins. And the man making the difference was Boston newcomer Jeremy Hermida. Playing left until Ellsbury returns (probably on Friday), Hermida batted in the winning run; actually he batted in three runs! So, after this second game played in the new Target Field, the series is tied at one game apiece. For Boston, the 1,2,3,4 of the game was as follows: first win for Lackey, double (game winning) for Hermida, third save for Papelbon, and fourth homerun for Pedroia (team leading). The series tiebreaker will be played tomorrow. Let's get over .500 Red Sox!

My first Sunday morning at my favorite New England sports living bar of the 2010 season. Since last Sunday's Opening Night, the Boston Red Sox only have two wins out of the five games played. Today they look to be at .500. In the bar I'm sitting in a booth this season because of the reconfiguration of the space done by the new owners. The one dangerous aspect of my new placement is that darts are being thrown to my left. Hope I won't have to do much ducking! Some new faces (dart playing ones), but Rich is here, as is Andrew, of course. Watching the Kansas City feed of the game as the NESN broadcast is blacked out where I am. Oh well, at least I can enjoy the upcoming victory among Red Sox people.

Red Sox got to the Kansas City Royals starter early - Boston scored four runs in the first - and Meche left after one out in the fourth. And that was the last scoring inning for Boston. One disturbing factor in Kauffman Stadium today was the lack of field communication between Boston players. Two incidents and Ellsbury was involved in both of them - Ellsbury/Hall and Ellsbury/Beltre. The second miscommunication caused injury to Jacoby, but fortunately no ribs were broken - just bruising and swelling. Need to work on communicating on the run.

Meanwhile, in the bar, hardly recognized anyone and it is a little more crowded than usual for a Sunday morning. Perhaps the "new" New England sports living bar has attracted new patrons. The noise level has increased and made watching the game less than ideal. Manager Mike showed up, as well as Skiing Stephen - hurray, people I know! The game is taking longer than the first two games of this series and I only have the game being recorded for three hours - ugh! There is a first, second, and third achievement for Red Sox players today - first win for Buchholz, second save for Papelbon, and third homerun for Pedoria. Perhaps Boston can achieve three wins in a row tomorrow. That would be absolutely wonderful!

Where to begin? Let's start at the end - the Boston Red Sox decisively broke their three-game losing streak with a multi-homer-fueled victory over the Kansas City Royals in Kauffman Stadium! Yes, Boston came through. Great to see two "old" regulars in the game - Varitek and Lowell, especially as Jason contributed not one, but two homeruns and Mike played flawlessly at third. Four Red Sox batters were responsible for five homeruns that produced six runs. Now that's hitting! The longballs came en masse tonight and let's hope Boston keeps that high hitting. Of course Josh a had better outing and personal outcome than he did on Opening Night. Could 'Tek have been a factor? Whatever it was, I'm glad it was there. Tomorrow Boston, let's win your first series of the season and keep the momentum going.

Tim redeemed himself in the seventh inning, but the relief pitching was unable to maintain his redemption. Perhaps the redemption should have stayed with Wakefield. Therefore, the Boston Red Sox started this road trip against the Kansas City Royals with a loss. And Boston's losing streak is now at three games. A win in Kauffman Stadium for the Red Sox is a must tomorrow. The streak has to end. The Boston hitting needs to step up and produce more runs. Want a winning road trip.

Well the Boston Red Sox have gone from first place to fourth place in four days. Now can they reverse the trend and go from fourth to first in four days? This third game of the initial season series was one of excellent starting pitching for both Boston and the New York Yankees. For the most part they kept the hitters in check. However, Boston's relief pitching fell short and the Red Sox suffered their second loss of the season and first series loss against the Yankees. Will this year be Problem Papelbon instead of Perfect Papelbon? Such a letdown from the celebration of Opening Night. This was a short stay at home, as the Red Sox head out on the road to begin a series against the Kansas City Royals on Friday. Perhaps the road will be kinder to Boston than Fenway Park was. Let's rule the road Red Sox!
