My Comment: Well, yesterday turned out to be the last game as a Red Sox player for Kevin Youkilis. He was traded to the Chicago White Sox for a pitcher and an utility player. I certainly wish Youk well with his new Sox. And he will be back in Fenway next month when the White Sox come in for a four-game series from the 16th to the 19th.

My Comment: It was wonderful the way the Red Sox fans honored Kevin Youkilis with cheers and standing ovations today. I hope this is all premature, but knowing the way things work in baseball, Youk may not be with the Boston Red Sox next Sunday.
However, Boston has won the series with the Atlanta Braves and is four games over .500 for the first time this season. Similiar to the five runs of the Marlins, the Braves socre four runs in each of the three games (though the runs in the first game were enough for a win) - strange consistency and concidence. And the Red Sox end interleague play with a record of eleven wins and seven losses. Now it's back to just playing the American League (for now) with the arrival of the Toronto Blue Jays tomorrow.

Boston Mops Miami, 6 To 5

My Comment: An encouraging beginning to the homestand for the Boston Red Sox - a three-game sweep of the Miami Marlins. The Marlins were surprisingly consist in their scoring over the three games. Miami scored exactly five runs in each of the games and it was never enough to win. Boston, however, was erratic in their scoring - 7 then 15 and finally 6 over the three games. Whatever works!

My Comment: Hitting for the cycle is common enough, but homering for the cycle (albeit with four different batters) has to be rare. Well, it was done tonight by members of the Red Sox in their overwhelming win against the Marlins. Saltalamacchia - solo homer, Middlebrooks - two-run homer, Aviles - three-run homer; Ortiz - four-run homer. Way to win Boston!

Diamond Defined: Foul Ball To Home Team

From the 2006 book, The Official Rules of Baseball Illustrated, by David Nemec, I will present Rule 2 of the Code - the definitions of baseball terms - over the course of the 2012 baseball season. Today’s terms are: Foul Ball, Foul Territory, Foul Tip, Ground Ball, Home Team

Foul Ball – a batted ball that settles on foul territory between home and first base, or between home and third base, or that bounds past first or third base on or over foul territory, or that first falls on foul territory beyond first or third base, or that, while on or over foul territory, touches the person of an umpire or player, or any object foreign to the natural ground.

Foul Territory – that part of the playing field outside the first and third baselines extended to the fence and perpendicularly upwards.

Foul Tip – a batted ball that goes sharp and direct from the bat to the catcher’s hands and is legally caught.

Ground Ball – a batted ball that rolls or bounces close to the ground.

Home Team – the team on whose grounds the game is played, or if the game is played on neutral grounds, the home team shall be designated by mutual agreement.

Boston heads home with a winning road trip and climbs back to .500. And, of course, winning both the Marlins and Cubs series. Looking forward to an even better homestand.

Diamond Defined: Fly Ball To Forfeited Game

From the 2006 book, The Official Rules of Baseball Illustrated, by David Nemec, I will present Rule 2 of the Code - the definitions of baseball terms - over the course of the 2012 baseball season. Today’s terms are: Fly Ball, Force Play, Forfeited Game.

Fly Ball – a batted ball that goes high in the air in flight.

Force Play – a play in which a runner legally loses her right to occupy a base by reason of the batter becoming a runner.

Forfeited Game – a game declared ended by the umpire-in-chief in favor of the offended team by the score of 9 to 0, for violation of the rules.
