World Series 2010

The fifth (and final) game of the 2010 World Series has produced a champion. Although I was not rooting for them, the San Francisco Giants have won the World Series Championship. My condolences to the Texas Rangers - I and other Boston Red Sox fans were supporting you in your first appearance in a World Series. Postseason Participants 2010

At the end of last year, I made a prediction as to who the participants in the 2010 postseason would be. My prediction turned out to be somewhat off the mark. I had predicted the following:

AL East – New York Yankees
AL Central – Minnesota Twins
AL West – Los Angeles Angels
AL Wild Card – Boston Red Sox

NL East – Atlanta Braves
NL Central – St. Louis Cardinals
NL West – Arizona Diamondbacks
NL Wild Card – Houston Astros

Two of the AL teams (the Twins and the Yankees) I predicted did make it this year and only one NL team (the Braves) did so. That is 50.00% for the AL, 25.00% for the NL, and 37.50% overall. The 2010 postseason is as follows:

AL East – Tampa Bay Rays
AL Central – Minnesota Twins
AL West – Texas Rangers
AL Wild Card – New York Yankees

NL East – Philadelphia Phillies
NL Central – Cincinnati Reds

The hypothesis is that when the Boston Red Sox have double digit hits (ten or more) in a game, the team is likely to win the game. When the Boston Red Sox have single digit hits (zero to nine) in a game, the team is likely to lose the game.

NOTE:

With my perception of the Boston Red Sox as being a power-hitting team, I would have predicted that the total number of double digit games would be greater than the total number of single digit games. This was not the case in 2010. Establishing 82 double digit games as the minimum number necessary to confirm my theoretical prediction and with the Red Sox having a total of 75 double digit games; they fell short by seven games, which is an 8.54% difference

Well it's the last Boston Red Sox game I'll watch in my favorite New England sports living bar until next year. For the final game of the 2010 season, the Red Sox are playing the New York Yankees in Fenway Park. Although Boston will not be heading to the postseason, a win in this game would result in a tie with the Yankees for the season record and, depending on what happens with Tampa Bay, would deny New York the AL East division title, making them the AL Wild Card participant. Even though the bar is officially opening at 9:00 a.m. on the weekends, I'm the only patron in the bar and I arrived around 9:20 a.m. and Andrew and is still setting up. Guess I'll have to wait for breakfast. Or perhaps I'll try one of the new items on the menu. And the other Red Sox regular, Rich, has arrived to watch the final game. Want to end in triumph. And the game begins! We take the lead. More people have arrived, but it is a quiet crowd. The Yankees tied it up, but on another Boston homerun, the lead returns to the Red Sox. David Ortiz is done for the season. Yesterday Mike Lowell played the final game of his career and retired to much appreciation from the fans and other people in his life. Thank you Mike! Glad you were able to end your career with Boston. Doing some damage to the Yankees in the sixth - lead increases! It is a homerun derby of a game - a second one of the game for Lowrie. Perhaps no extra innings today. Well, the Yankees scored a run and now have the bases-loaded in the eighth, with two outs - no more runs scored! The last time the Red Sox are at bat for 2010 and they go down 1, 2, 3. Jason Varitek is called back after heading out to play at the top of the ninth - a nice ovation from the fans. Just the top of the ninth to get through and it is a season for Boston - not when the Red Sox wanted to end, but they do tie the season series with the Yankees and New York does not win the division. Now will have to get through the postseason and look forward to next year. Thank you Red Sox!
