Red Sox Hitting Recap, 4 April to 30 May 2010

Between Sunday 4 April 2010 and Sunday 30 May 2010, the Boston Red Sox played fifty-two games – winning twenty-nine and losing twenty-three.

The hypothesis is that when the Boston Red Sox have double digit hits (ten or more) in a game, the team is likely to win the game. When the Boston Red Sox have single digit hits (zero to nine) in a game, the team is likely to lose the game.

Hitting (Season-To-Sunday 30 May 2010)

Red Sox wins when hitting in double digits = 18
Red Sox losses when hitting in double digits = 5
Total number of games = 23
Red Sox won 78.26% of the games when hitting in double digits

Red Sox wins when hitting in single digits = 11
Red Sox losses when hitting in single digits = 18
Total number of games = 29
Red Sox won 37.93% of the games when hitting in single digits

The hypothesis remains valid.

Well it's just me, Rich (other Sunday regular), and out bartender Andrew in my favorite New England sports living bar. Going to be a very quiet morning in the bar. One other person has arrived and another person is waiting for food to go. Ho hum. The Boston Red Sox game is going slowly, but it is now tied. Now there is some action by the Red Sox against the Kansas City Royals and Boston has a six run lead. Fun times in Fenway Park. Rich is going on a trip to visit six baseball stadiums in June and he finally got the luggage rack he needed for his car. Will be a great trip. A few more people have entered the bar, but not noisy or intense. Mike, the manager, made a brief appearance. A very good game for the Red Sox and they end with a split of the series.

It's Sunday and I and the other regular Rich are the only patrons in my favorite New England sports living bar along with our usual bartender Andrew. Andrew said his mother is in town and that he'll be taking the week off and head up to San Francisco with her for a visit. They should have a good time. It has been a decent week for the Red Sox - a complete game by Jon Lester, a one-hitter by Daisuke Matsuzaka, and the team is above .500. Josh Beckett is on the DL, but Jacoby Ellsbury is back and playing centerfield - yeah! The Boston Red Sox score first against the Philadelphia Phillies. Bases-loaded in the fourth with one out for Boston. Score two more runs! Still Rich and I are the only bar clients - nice. Well, I wrote a bit too soon - four more people arrived in the bar. Red Sox doing very well in Citizens Bank Park today in this third and final game of the series. Bases-loaded in the ninth with one out for Boston. One more run. And the Red Sox win this series against the Phillies. A good start to this road trip. Now on to the Rays!

Another Boston Red Sox two-run lead in the ninth. But this time, a Red Sox victory at the end of the game against the New York Yankees. Also not as exciting a game as yesterday's and not as defensively well played. Good to leave Yankee Stadium on a positive note. Today Yankee Stadium became an amusement park with the main attraction being the roller coaster on which the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees rode and which was driving the fans of both teams crazy. Up and down and back and forth and up and down. How does Boston go into the ninth with the lead and lose on the only two homeruns New York batted while Boston had five of them during the game? The Red Sox should not have lost this game. the most frustrating aspect to the season so far in never knowing if all the pitching will be good, all of it bad, or if one part is not able to get the job done. Sometimes it feels like the Red Sox are on a roller coaster everyday - back and forth with each pitcher. That said, I would like to see Tim Wakefield back in the rotation. Need to do a shake up of the status quo. In the end, today I was not amused.

After a week away I am back at my favorite New England sports living bar. While I am watching the game, a fundraising event is underway for a former bar waitress, Stacie, who has breast cancer. Several people stopped by the bar before heading to the event, including Stacie. It was great to see her looking well and as I wear my Team Stacie t-shirt in support, I wish Stacie a very successful event and great day! In the bar is the other usual suspect - Rich - and two guys I saw on my way to the bar. Very quiet. May change later when the Celtics/Magic game starts. Both pitchers are starting their innings with walks. Bases-loaded for the Detroit Tigers in the second with two outs. A run scores, still bases-loaded and two outs. Another run scores. Still bases-loaded and two outs. Walks hurt. The Boston Red Sox did get one of them back in the next inning. Missed ground ball by Hall continues the fourth with two outs and adds two to Detroit. More people have arrived, including the waitress Jen (anticipation of a basketball crowd). Lackey is not a good fielder. Boston had its chance with the bases-loaded and two outs in the seventh, but they don't score any runs. Come on guys! The basketball people are in full force in the bar and the Celtics game is about to begin. The noise level has audibly increased. Well the Red Sox didn't pull it off in Comerica Park and at halftime the Celtics are leading the Magic. Perhaps there will be some Boston joy today.

What happened? The Boston Red Sox had the win in hand and then lost it at the hands of the relief pitching. So Lester ends up with a no decision in this second game against the Detroit Tigers. Now Boston has to win in Comerica Park tomorrow in order to win the three-game series. Losing in this manner is just not acceptable. Let's get back on track and have a good win tomorrow. Play well!

It's a "two, four, six, eight, who do we appreciate?" day for the Boston Red Sox - second homerun for Bill Hall, fourth win for Clay Buchholz, sixth homerun for David Ortiz, and eighth homerun for Duston Pedroia. The Detroit Tigers were blasted by Boston today in Comerica Park and the Red Sox have their first win of this three-game series. Good that Oritz can still have a multi-homerun game - he's not done yet! It looks like Clay has become the Boston ace, though I am still rooting for Beckett to put everything together and have a terrific, not a terrible season. Boston goes for the series win tomorrow and I hope they have as much fun on Saturday as they did on Friday. "Two, four, six, eight, who do we appreciate?" Red Sox, Red Sox, Red Sox!!!

Toronto Trumps Boston

TORONTO: 0 0 0 0 1 0 2 0 0 - 3 6 0
BOSTON: 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 - 2 6 0

Hard for the Boston Red Sox to win a ballgame when the officiating is terrible. That called third strike on Ortiz in the ninth was clearly ball four. A walk to David would have given the Red Sox two on with one out and a much better chance to at least tie the game against the Toronto Blue Jays. And that opportunity in Fenway Park was taken away by umpire Dale Scott. At least Terry stood up for his players and got ejected for his trouble. A totally unsatisfactory game and a bad way to end the Boston homestand, even though the Red Sox won seven out of ten games during the three series. They do remain in fourth place in the AL East. The Red Sox will be heading out on the road for a short five-game trip and will play again on Friday in Detroit.

Today's number for the Boston Red Sox is one and first up is minus one - one less run, one less hit, and one less error than in yesterday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays but with the same winning result. And on the plus one side of the ledger for Boston today - one more homerun, one better pitched game giving up only one run, and with one more win tomorrow they can move up one place into third in the standings. Fenway Park has indeed been a friendly place for the Red Sox this homestand. Let's end the homestand with a another sweep of the Blue Jays!

By winning this game, the Boston Red Sox pick up where they left off with the Toronto Blue Jays two weeks ago and that's great. The manner in which they won was not stellar, but patience did payoff for the Red Sox in Fenway Park today and that is what matters. But they do need to go back to the balance appproach to winning games as this one was unbalanced. If the Red Sox repeat a sweep of the Blue Jays, they can move into third place in the standings and launch their way to the top. A sweep repeat please!

Finally! The Boston Red Sox did manage to win a game against the New York Yankees and for the third game in a row in Fenway Park, the losing team scored three runs. And this time it wasn't the Red Sox. It was a balanced game for Boston - pitching, hitting, and defense - all the pieces of the game did their part well. The Red Sox need to keep everything working together and the wins will come more regularly. Boston is back at .500 and remains at home for the next three days. Three is the number of the day for this long (rain delay in the fifth) game between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees. The Red Sox scored three runs in Fenway Park today, the same as yesterday and on both days that was not enough. Boston did have two players who each hit their third homeruns of the season; however one Yankee player had three homeruns in the game. Boston had one less hit than yesterday and incurred one more error today (I should be specific and say one more Beltre error). I don't know what to write - you know there is no salvaging the game when a position player comes in to pitch. What's wrong Boston? You sweep, you get swept, you sweep, and you are about to get swept again. This up and down will not get you a winning regular season, never mind entrance into the postseason. Please get it together. Win tomorrow Red Sox!

Not the start to the Boston Red Sox three-game series against the New York Yankees that I had envisioned. The bright spots in today's loss at Fenway Park was that the Red Sox did not make any errors and that Ortiz drove in two of the three Boston runs. And I suppose another thing to take comfort in is that Boston was not shutout. Beckett cannot fall apart like that and expect to have a wining season. None of the pitchers can. Boston's hitting faltered, but the high level of batting is difficult to maintain every day, although it would have been great if the falloff waited a few days. Anyway, the Red Sox get to even the series tomorrow.

It was a long game, but it's a preview and a good momentum for going into the weekend. Boston has been consistent in hitting this series - having eleven hits in each of the last three games. Let's hope the consistency continues. Such a much better outing for Matsuzaka than his last one. Improved overall pitching for Boston this series. Now the Red Sox will have to keep this level of play to be successful over the next three games. Looking for another Red Sox sweep!
