Good Afternoon! A rare time for me to be in my favorite New England sports living bar. There are about a dozen people here - half women, half men - and that is also rare for there to be such an even breakdown in the genders at any one time in the bar. Speaking of evenness, the Boston Red Sox currently have three wins and three losses on their ten-game road trip and they will try to increase the win number today in the game against the Seattle Mariners. After a couple of innings, a little dual between pitchers. Lots of chatter between a woman and a man at the bar about baseball. Ah, a lot of impressing going on. There has been scoring in Safeco Field, but it is the Mariners who have broken the stalemate. Now they have the bases loaded with two outs and do not score. Well, Boston has decided join in the scoring and has taken the lead - let's keep it! More people have come into the bar and are contributing to the noise level. A lot more people than I think Andrew was anticipating this Sunday. No Rich today, but Jen has arrived and will ease Andrew's afternoon. Never thought there would be so many people here on a Sunday afternoon. And there is a dart playing boy to my left and a friend has joined him. Much activity today. Bottom of the eighth and the Mariners have the bases loaded with no outs (Okajima cannot field his position). Now Seattle has the lead and there are still not any outs and two on base. Bases-loaded again and still no outs!!! Thank you Youkilis! Two outs, two on. Finally it ends. Should have kept Matsuzaka in, no matter what his pitch count was. Can Boston come back? No they can't and they split with Seattle and have three wins and four losses on the road trip. It's onto Los Angeles and perhaps better results.

It's Andrew behind the bar, Rich and a new woman at the bar, and of course me in the New England sports living bar. It will be a very quiet morning. Surprise! Nick has come in - first time I've seen him here on a Sunday. He has a new job, a new apartment, and is here to meet a woman. Life is going well for him. Plus while we were talking, the Red Sox scored a run! Only a couple of more people have arrived. A pleasant atmosphere here, but at Fenway Park it's not so pleasant as the Rangers have taken the lead. And have added on to their lead. One last chance for Boston to salvage this game. A homerun for the Red Sox, but not enough for a win. Boston will start a ten-game West coast road trip on a less than positive note. Let's hit the road well!

National League Notches American League

For the first time in thirteen years the National League has defeated the American League in the annual mid-season classic. The 2010 National League Champion will now have home field advantage in the World Series. This eighty-first All-Star game lasted two hours and fifty-nine minutes at Angel Stadium. The MVP award went to Brian McCann of the Atlanta Braves who doubled in the only three National League runs in the seventh inning. The three healthy Red Sox All-Stars made appearances. Jon Lester pitched in the top of the sixth inning and gave up no hits and no runs. David Ortiz batted in the bottom of the sixth and the ninth – he struck out looking for the third out in the sixth and he got a leadoff single in the ninth, but made the second out on a play at second base. And Adrian Beltre played third base in the top of the eighth inning and made the first out in the ninth inning by striking out swinging. Let the second half begin!

Today the baseball world learned that New York Yankees owner, George Michael Steinbrenner III (Friday 4 July 1930 to Tuesday 13 July 2010), suffered a fatal heart attack this morning. There was a tribute to him before the beginning of the All-Star game and of course statements by current/former New York Yankees and others. I can imagine “The Boss” having one of his tirades on leaving on this particular day as well as the added insult of the American League loss. But it is fitting that such a major force in Major League baseball departed on a special baseball day, even if he is a New York Yankee.

Well I arrived at my favorite New England sports living bar and people were already there - World Cup lives! Though I don't follow soccer, the Netherlands was once a neighbor of mine, so I'm rooting for them over Spain to be the first time World Cup winner. Go Orange! Back to the Boston Red Sox. They have not fared well over the week, they are in third place in the AL East, having lost the second place position during their disastrous series with Tampa Bay. They are going to try to win the series against the Toronto Blue Jays today in Rogers Centre. One good event, Terry won his nine hundredth game as a manager - congrats. So far, no score in the game. Blue Jays are hitting, but the Red Sox bats are silent.

Decidedly outnumbered by the people here to watch the soccer final - seeing some orange in the crowd, but not overwhelming. The noise level is high, as expected. See some red Spain shirts in the bar. I guess the soccer final is starting later than I thought. It's going to be a long morning. I never knew that there were so many soccer fans. Rich and Lisa are here and I think we are the only patrons interested in the Red Sox game. Andrew, Jen, Lauren and Steve are working. Crazy day for them! So strange to be out numbered by a non-New England team in this New England bar. Meanwhile, there have been some threats, but neither Boston nor Toronto have scored. and Boston still can't get a hit - Litsch has a no-hitter going through the fifth inning. Dice-K is getting out of jams and is looking good. Now if only Boston can get the hitting going. The dual is still strong at the top of the sixth. And finally the World Cup begins and everyone in the bar settles in.

I, of course, am concentrating on the Red Sox. Let's go Boston! Finally a Boston hit and it is a double and scoring position for Scutaro. Homeruns and Boston is on the board and has the lead! Litsch is settling down again, almost. Now only the soccer game is scoreless. Dice-K has starts the seventh and gives up a two-run homer. Bard comes in to relieve him. Two quick outs and after a Blue Jay reaches, the third out. Hold on to the lead Red Sox. And at halftime in the World Cup, the teams are still without a score. Top of the ninth back at Rogers Centre with Boston in the lead and Ortiz at bat. David doesn't make it on base, but the next two batters do. Another chance for some runs, but no more runs at all. Papelbon comes in to close out the game. Tying run at first. No run! Boston wins the series! Now the All-Star break. Good luck American League! And still no score in the World Cup. Good luck Netherlands!

Well I'm back at my favorite New England sports living bar after a two week absence. Although the Boston Red Sox have a number of players injured and on the disabled list (is there a calcium deficiency among baseball players this season?), Boston is in second place in the AL East. And once again the Red Sox have six players named to the All-Star roster - third baseman Adrian Beltre, pitcher Clay Buchholz, pitcher Jon Lester, catcher Victor Martinez, DH David Ortiz, and second baseman Dustin Pedroia. Unfortunately, Victor and Dustin are on the disabled list, so they will be replaced. Always good to have decent Red Sox representation at the mid-season classic.

Considering that today is the 4th of July, there may be few of us here. Andrew is working today and so far I'm the only one in the bar. Just before the start of the game, a couple arrived - now there are three of us. Rich has come in and he talked about his baseball stadium road trip. He had a great time - was in the middle of a hail storm in Nebraska, sat in the bleachers in Wrigley, met up with a friend in Denver and saw the Red Sox play. Only seven more stadiums for Rich to visit.

Having a good pitchers dual between Boston and the Baltimore Orioles. Unfortunately the Orioles score first in Fenway Park. More arrivals in the bar, Lisa and Andrew's wife Jess (she just stayed for a few minutes). Red Sox are stranding men on base and just don't seem to be getting anything going.
