My Comment: A shutout in an All-Star game - was not expected. At least David Ortiz did get a single in the fifth. Unfortunately, once again, no home field advantage for the American League in the World Series. The question is, will this be of any conceern for the Boston Red Sox?

My Comment: For the second year in a row, the National League has won the All-Star game and the National League championship team will have home field advantage in the World Series. Prince Fielder was the All-Star MVP for his three-run homer. The line on the Red Sox All-Stars is as follows: Jon Lester did not play because he is on the disabled list; Josh Beckett suffered a "tweak" in his left knee and did not play; Jacoby Ellsbury, Adrian Gonzalez, David Ortiz and Kevin Youkilis played. None of them made any errors and two of them had hits. Youkilis had a single in the seventh inning and Gonzalez gave the American League its only run with a long ball in the fourth. Definitely a pitcher's game today. Now we return to our regularly scheduled program. Onto the second half!

National League Notches American League

For the first time in thirteen years the National League has defeated the American League in the annual mid-season classic. The 2010 National League Champion will now have home field advantage in the World Series. This eighty-first All-Star game lasted two hours and fifty-nine minutes at Angel Stadium. The MVP award went to Brian McCann of the Atlanta Braves who doubled in the only three National League runs in the seventh inning. The three healthy Red Sox All-Stars made appearances. Jon Lester pitched in the top of the sixth inning and gave up no hits and no runs. David Ortiz batted in the bottom of the sixth and the ninth – he struck out looking for the third out in the sixth and he got a leadoff single in the ninth, but made the second out on a play at second base. And Adrian Beltre played third base in the top of the eighth inning and made the first out in the ninth inning by striking out swinging. Let the second half begin!

Today the baseball world learned that New York Yankees owner, George Michael Steinbrenner III (Friday 4 July 1930 to Tuesday 13 July 2010), suffered a fatal heart attack this morning. There was a tribute to him before the beginning of the All-Star game and of course statements by current/former New York Yankees and others. I can imagine “The Boss” having one of his tirades on leaving on this particular day as well as the added insult of the American League loss. But it is fitting that such a major force in Major League baseball departed on a special baseball day, even if he is a New York Yankee.

Once again the American League has defeated the National League in the annual All-Star game. They have now won this mid-season encounter for thirteen consecutive years. With this victory, the 2009 American League Champion will have home field advantage in the World Series. It was a fairly quick game at Busch Stadium, lasting two hours and thirty-one minutes. Curtis Granderson of the Detroit Tigers scored the game winning run on a sacrifice fly by Adam Jones of the Baltimore Orioles. The MVP was Carl Crawford of the Tampa Bay Rays who caught a potential homerun ball in the seventh inning. And three of the All-Stars from the Boston Red Sox played in the game. Jason Bay and Kevin Youkilis had one single each and Jonathan Papelbon received the win. Onto the second half of the season!
