National League Notches American League

For the first time in thirteen years the National League has defeated the American League in the annual mid-season classic. The 2010 National League Champion will now have home field advantage in the World Series. This eighty-first All-Star game lasted two hours and fifty-nine minutes at Angel Stadium. The MVP award went to Brian McCann of the Atlanta Braves who doubled in the only three National League runs in the seventh inning. The three healthy Red Sox All-Stars made appearances. Jon Lester pitched in the top of the sixth inning and gave up no hits and no runs. David Ortiz batted in the bottom of the sixth and the ninth – he struck out looking for the third out in the sixth and he got a leadoff single in the ninth, but made the second out on a play at second base. And Adrian Beltre played third base in the top of the eighth inning and made the first out in the ninth inning by striking out swinging. Let the second half begin!

Today the baseball world learned that New York Yankees owner, George Michael Steinbrenner III (Friday 4 July 1930 to Tuesday 13 July 2010), suffered a fatal heart attack this morning. There was a tribute to him before the beginning of the All-Star game and of course statements by current/former New York Yankees and others. I can imagine “The Boss” having one of his tirades on leaving on this particular day as well as the added insult of the American League loss. But it is fitting that such a major force in Major League baseball departed on a special baseball day, even if he is a New York Yankee.
