My Comment: Boston suffered a shutout at the hands of the Angels. No series win for the Red Sox, but they do remain in first place in the American League East. Tomorrow the team takes on Seattle. Let's hope the Northwest is kinder to Boston than the Southwest was.

National League Notches American League

For the first time in thirteen years the National League has defeated the American League in the annual mid-season classic. The 2010 National League Champion will now have home field advantage in the World Series. This eighty-first All-Star game lasted two hours and fifty-nine minutes at Angel Stadium. The MVP award went to Brian McCann of the Atlanta Braves who doubled in the only three National League runs in the seventh inning. The three healthy Red Sox All-Stars made appearances. Jon Lester pitched in the top of the sixth inning and gave up no hits and no runs. David Ortiz batted in the bottom of the sixth and the ninth – he struck out looking for the third out in the sixth and he got a leadoff single in the ninth, but made the second out on a play at second base. And Adrian Beltre played third base in the top of the eighth inning and made the first out in the ninth inning by striking out swinging. Let the second half begin!

Today the baseball world learned that New York Yankees owner, George Michael Steinbrenner III (Friday 4 July 1930 to Tuesday 13 July 2010), suffered a fatal heart attack this morning. There was a tribute to him before the beginning of the All-Star game and of course statements by current/former New York Yankees and others. I can imagine “The Boss” having one of his tirades on leaving on this particular day as well as the added insult of the American League loss. But it is fitting that such a major force in Major League baseball departed on a special baseball day, even if he is a New York Yankee.

Angels Astound Red Sox

Well, this was not the start of the ALDS for the Boston Red Sox that was envisioned. Today's game was a surprising shutout by the Los Angeles Angels on magnificent Angels pitching and inefficient Red Sox hitting. It was a pitcher's duel for four innings, then one bad pitch by Lester changed the game completely. Also errors and bad umpiring calls in Angel Stadium contributed to the Boston loss in this first game of the ALDS. In tomorrow's game, the Red Sox need their hitting to increase and to capitalize when men are on base. Boston has to win tomorrow so that the return to Fenway Park is with the series tied and not with the Red Sox down two games. Let's go Red Sox!!

Angels Above Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox did not win the extra-innings, rubber game of the three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels and they would not have deserved to win. How do you leave seventeen men on base and not score? And only score three runs with twenty-three runners in scoring position? I know the defense was excellent for both teams, but Boston had many more scoring opportunities than Los Angeles (twice the bases were loaded). David Ortiz made the last out in both bases-loaded situations. Perhaps it truly is time to reassess his placement in the lineup - a lower position in the batting order may be necessary or not in the lineup at all. What do you say Terry? As for Francona, he was tossed out of the game (the first time this season) in the tenth inning for questioning a three and one strike call on Julio Lugo by umpire Bill Miller. There were many called third strikes against Boston in this game by Miller. The Red Sox fly to Seattle tonight and will not be back in Angel Stadium again this regular season. However, if past events are repeated, then Boston will be back at Angel Stadium in the post-season and will win that series. The Red Sox may not win the most games against the Angels during the regular season, but they do know how to beat them in the playoffs!

Angels Agitate Red Sox

Starting out well but ending up badly, the Boston Red Sox dropped the second game of the three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels. The knuckleball did not work well in Angel Stadium today for Tim Wakefield. The Angel bats were able to find a way to hit against that pitch and the Red Sox bats were silent after the second inning. Tomorrow offers Boston a chance for retribution against Los Angeles in the rubber match of the series.

Angels Retake Red Sox

Confrontation was the theme of the day in Angel Stadium as the Boston Red Sox and the Los Angeles Angels met in the rubber match of their first three-game series. In the first inning when Red Sox starting pitcher Josh Beckett threw high at Bobby Abreu, after the batter had been granted a timeout, Abreu objected. Members of both teams ran out to the home plate area to take part in the first "meeting of the minds" this season. Amazingly there were no flying fists, but four members of the Angels were ejected from the game - Manager Mike Scioscia, Coach Mickey Hatcher, Outfielder Torii Hunter, and Reliever Justin Speier. The Red Sox were kept intact.

However, keeping Boston whole did not result in the victory that truly counts - scoring more runs than Los Angeles. Not sure why Manager Terry Francona had Nick Green (who already had two singles) attempt a bunt (he struck out) in a potential run scoring situation late in the game. The Red Sox do not bunt well. And why did J.D. Drew swing (he popped out) on the first pitch from Scot Shields who was throwing numerous balls? Taking and walking works. Now Boston travels up the California coast to face the Oakland Athletics (who have the identical record, two and four) in a three-game series. Perhaps Northern California will be a more successful area for Boston than Southern California was.
