It is one of the wonders of life how one's place in the world can change in a course of a few hours. The Boston Red Sox came into this first of a three-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays leading the American League East. The Red Sox leave Rogers Centre in second place in the AL East and the not-to-be-named team (see standings below) in first place. Of course this will change, but it is annoying never-the-less. A five-run fifth inning by the Blue Jays was all that was needed to change the baseball world order. There was one major Boston opportunity missed (first inning, bases-loaded, two outs, David Ortiz flied out to center instead of hitting a grand slam). And if all the subsequent run production remained the same, Boston would have won the game. I don't know what the answer is regarding Big Papi (do the Red Sox?) - I have to believe that he will come out of this horror of a slump and be the major positive difference we have known for years. In any case, others were hitting and Jacoby Ellsbury started a new hitting streak today. The bullpen (Bard, Saito) was effective in not allowing any additional runs. And tomorrow, perhaps an upward change in Boston's place in the world.
