Red Sox Pound Pirates

The Boston Red Sox hosted the Pittsburgh Pirates at the City of Palms Park for a preseason game. Playing in this Fort Myers ball field would not prove to be a pleasant experience for the Pirates. It was the Red Sox who prevailed today. Boston posted the first runs of the game with one run in the bottom of the first and a three-run homer by Jason Varitek in the bottom of the second inning. Pittsburgh put their first run on the board with one in the top of the fifth inning. The Pirates also scored two runs in the top of the sixth and one run in the top of the seventh. The Red Sox scored runs from the fifth through the eighth innings. They produced one run each in the fifth and sixth innings, scored three runs in the seventh inning (two of them on a two-run homer by Chip Ambres), and added two final runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Boston beat Pittsburgh by a score of eleven to four.
