Boston Bypasses Tampa, 8 to 7

TAMPA BAY: 0 0 1 4 0 2 0 0 0 - 7 11 1
BOSTON: 0 0 0 2 0 0 3 3 x - 8 9 0

Not only was this the final Spring Training home game for the Boston Red Sox; it was also the final game that they would play in the City of Palms Park as their home field. The City of Fort Myers has agreed to build another ballpark for the Red Sox to keep the team from relocating to another city for the preseason. And satisfactorily Boston won this game against the Tampa Bay Rays. Although the Rays out-homered the Red Sox (three two- run homers to one three-run homer), Boston came up with the one run needed to win.

BOSTON: 0 1 0 1 0 0 0 1 0 - 3 7 0
PHILADELPHIA: 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 1 8 1

In this final game of the preseason between the Boston Red Sox and the Philadelphia Phillies in Clearwater, the Phillies were able to score their first run against the Red Sox this Spring Training. A week ago (Sunday 22 March 2009), Boston was able to shut out the Phillies. At Bright House Field today, Philadelphia partially avoided a repeat of last week's result by scoring a run in the third, but they did still end up losing to Boston. The Red Sox had two homeruns in the game - solo shots by Chris Carter in the top of the second and Jacoby Ellsbury in the top of the eighth. Fourth win in a row for the Red Sox.

MINNESOTA: 2 0 0 0 2 0 0 0 0 - 4 8 0
BOSTON: 0 0 7 0 0 1 1 0 x - 9 7 0

The Boston Red Sox victory over the Minnesota Twins in Fort Myers was significant on a local level. By winning this game, the Red Sox won the annual Mayor's Cup which is given to either Minnesota or Boston to honor the team who has the most victories in team-to-team competetion during Spring Training. This was the third year in a row that Boston has won the cup given by the Mayor of Fort Myers. Both teams make their Spring Training home in Fort Myers.

Apparently, it was also homerun day in the City of Palms Park. The Red Sox had three multiple run homers in the bottom of the third inning (Rocco Baldelli three-run, David Ortiz two-run, Jason Bay two-run). The seven runs produced were more than enough to beat the Twins. Minnesota also contributed one two-run homer in the top of the fifth inning (Matt Tolbert). These would be their last runs of the game.

One year, eleven months, and one day later the Boston Red Sox repeated the homerun feat that happened on Sunday 22 April 2007. In that regular season game, Boston hit four consecutive home runs in the bottom of the third inning against the New York Yankees in Fenway Park - the first time that occurred in Red Sox history. In the bottom of the sixth inning today, the Red Sox hit four homeruns in a row against the Detroit Tigers in a Spring Training game in the City of Palms Park. The Minnesota Twins traveled several miles across Fort Myers to play the Boston Red Sox in the City of Palms Park. As this was St. Patrick's Day, the usual festive atmosphere moved up a couple of notches with fans (and Red Sox players) wearin' o' the green and with a number of leprechauns in attendance. And Boston found its pot o' gold at the end of the rainbow with a win over Minnesota. The Red Sox did all their scoring in the first five innings of the game which included four homeruns (one more than yesterday's win against the Blue Jays). Boston put across one run in the bottom of the first inning and then the homeruns began. In the bottom of the second inning Jason Varitek start the homeruns with a solo shot for the only run in the Boston half. Two more runs were added in the bottom of inning three on a two-run homer by David Ortiz and in the fourth inning there were two two-run homers by Jacoby Ellsbury and Jason Bay for another four runs.
